Merchant Workshop with Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Philip Silva from BBG explains judging criteria

The North Flatbush Avenue AVenue BID along with the Brookyn Botanic Garden/GreenBridge Program held a Workshop in our District for the GREENEST BLOCK IN BROOKLYN CONTEST on Friday, April 16, 2010.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden/GreenBridge team members, lead by Philip Silva, demonstrated to the neighborhood merchants ways to showcase their businesses. The group learned how to decorate and use a planter to encourage visitors.  The also explained the Thriller, Filler and Spiller effect to showcase your storefront.   Afterwards, everyone got to go home with some seed packets to get a head start on their storefront garden.

The North Flatbush Avenue Avenue BID has entered our district into the Greenest Block in Brookyn Contest, therefore, all businesses on North Flatbush Avenue Avenue from Plaza Street to Atlantic Avenue are eligible to win.  All storefronts will be judged and the winners will be announced sometime in September.  The BID had 2 winners in 2008 – the Brooklyn Bears Community Garden won for Best Community Garden.  In 2008 and 2009  – Burrito Bar and Kitchen won 2nd place for Best Storefront.  You can be a winner too in 2010.  Cash prizes and awards and an invite to an Award Ceremony held at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens with Borough President Marty Markowitz in September.
